I was commissioned by Nike Basketball, to design the shoe box for the Kobe Bryant Fade to Black Series.
This was a special and limited edition tribute from Nike to Kobe Bryant for his retirement. Nike recreated all 13 shoes they had designed for Kobe during his career, with each shoe fading from white to black. The box features snake scales made out of stones, following the same color theme of fading from white to black.
THE PROCESS
Behind the scenes of how the scales where created, formed, and the RnD that went into it before landing on the final design and direction.
The most important part of this project was to study and understand how snake scales look, form, overlap, and interact on movement. Based on those observations, a variation of snake skills where created and laid out in a similar formation to real snake skin. Once the pattern was finalizaed, the stone material was created and diffused each different scale based off a gradient pattern, and using different references as inspirtation. Several patterns where used in the RnD process, and a few where overlayed to create the final effect.
