A Tribute to the Porsche 911 Spyder
The 911 Spyder remains, for Porsche and the whole automotive landscape, a kind of unicorn, an unreplicated, dreamlike beast. That, along with the broader challenge of rethinking Porsche design, led to Project 411.
Sticking to timeless cues of the ’50s and ’60s, like aligning the headlights with the front wheels or smoothly wrapped bodywork, is part of what makes Porsche design so iconic. Those same principles were used to rethink the 911, this time with an electric powertrain, contemporary lighting, and modern electronics and mechanics.
The Luxury Highway Cruiser
Hypercars today are cool, but reaching 400 km/h on a runway is fairly useless. The 411 is built for a new class of vehicle, the luxury highway cruiser. In a not-so-distant future where autonomous driving is perfected and highway speed limits rise with it, removing human error allows safe cruising at 300 or even 400+ km/h, a real alternative to flight.
Interior
The interior follows the curves and lines of the overall design language smoothly and organically. Minimalistic curves are sculpted by narrow bands that seem to protrude from the dashboard and embrace the occupants in the two seats. Even with headroom restricted for optimal aerodynamics, the interior offers ample legroom for the car’s primary use, autonomous cruising.
Power
To achieve the performance and range needed at sustained high speeds, the concept makes use of inductive, on-the-go charging, with charging strips embedded beneath the tarmac. The relatively small battery is kept constantly topped up this way, letting the car draw its power straight from the road as it moves, much like an electric train.
Racing
Built for extreme efficiency, the original design of the P411, from mechanics to tires, is all about smooth acceleration and straight-line speed. It will still allow for a little stress in the curves, adding some real fun in driven mode.
